EV Charging Points β€”
Building a Route-Smart Charging Station Locator That Removes Range Anxiety

A startup's vision of stress-free EV travel β€” built into a fully coordinated iOS and Android platform helping drivers locate, compare, and reserve charging stations along their route without guessing at compatibility.

About ClientΒ

EV Charging Points was built around a frustration every electric vehicle owner eventually runs into: you're on a long drive, your battery is dropping, and you have no reliable way to know which nearby station actually supports your vehicle's port type, or whether it's even free right now. The client's question was whether a single app could remove that uncertainty entirely β€” showing drivers real charging stations along their actual route, not just a generic map pin with no context about compatibility or availability.

Their answer was a single connected platform. Drivers enter their EV's charging port type and power requirements, the app locates compatible stations along their route, and they choose between turbocharging or regular charging with real-time availability shown before they arrive. The admin team manages stations, cities, and users from one Laravel panel.

About Client Gmta

Why EV Charging Points Chose Us

Musicify GMTA

Station locator apps are a different kind of engineering problem than a simple map with pins on it. EV Charging Points needed real compatibility logic β€” matching a vehicle's actual port type and power needs against a station's real specs β€” not just proximity. Route-based discovery, live availability status, and charging type selection all needed to work together, and most map-based templates don't handle any of that correctly.

The client had looked at generic navigation and mapping SDKs and found none of them handled EV-specific compatibility, prepaid and postpaid billing, or city-by-city station management out of the box. There was no way to manage charging points and cities from a single admin system, no role-based access for a growing operations team, and no structured way to track usage across the network. These were product requirements that needed a custom build.

Challenges That Shaped the Build

Building an EV Charging or Station Locator App?

Compatibility matching, route-aware discovery, and real-time availability all need to work together, not as separate features bolted onto a generic map.

Our Approach

Compatibility-First Search Architecture

Compatibility-First Search Architecture

Rather than treating charging port type and power requirements as filters applied after the fact, we built compatibility matching into the core of the search logic itself. Every station in the database carries structured specs for port type, power output, and charging speed, and the search engine checks a driver's entered vehicle details against those specs before a station ever surfaces as a suggestion. This meant drivers never saw a result they'd have to double-check manually, since incompatible stations were filtered out at the query level rather than flagged with a warning after the driver had already tapped through to view details.

01
Route-Aware Discovery, Not Just Proximity 02

Route-Aware Discovery, Not Just Proximity

Nearby, isn't always useful on a long drive, so we built station discovery around the driver's actual direction of travel, using current location combined with Google location suggestions to understand where the trip was headed. Rather than sorting purely by distance, the app weighs stations along the plausible route higher than ones technically closer but in the wrong direction entirely. This mattered most on longer trips, where a station five minutes off the actual route is a worse suggestion than one slightly farther away but directly on the way to where the driver is going.

Real-Time Power Point Status Tracking 03

Real-Time Power Point Status Tracking

Every charging point in the network reports its live status back to the platform, so the availability shown to a driver reflects what's actually happening at that station in the moment, not a cached snapshot from earlier in the day. We built this as a continuously updating status layer rather than a periodic refresh, since a driver deciding whether to detour to a station needs current information, not information that was accurate ten minutes ago or based on outdated station conditions and availability data.

City-Based Admin Control With Role Permissions

City-Based Admin Control With Role Permissions

The Laravel admin panel was built around how the operations team actually needed to scale, city by city, rather than as one flat list of every station nationwide. Administrators can be assigned roles scoped to specific cities or specific responsibilities, so a regional operations lead manages their own stations without needing, or being given, access to unrelated cities. This structure meant the client could expand into a new city by configuring it in the panel and assigning the right people to it, without touching the underlying codebase or waiting on a development cycle.

Process We Followed

01 Discovery and Compatibility Architecture Discovery and Compatibility Architecture
Discovery and Compatibility Architecture

Discovery and Compatibility Architecture

Before development began, we mapped how port type, power requirements, and station specs needed to relate to each other, defined the route-aware discovery logic, and designed the admin panel around how operations would actually scale city by city. This gave the development team a clear technical foundation before implementation began.

  • Vehicle-to-station compatibility model mapping
  • Route-aware discovery logic definition
  • Prepaid and postpaid billing flow design
  • Admin panel wireframes and city-level permission structure

Core Development β€” Apps and Admin Panel

The customer app, admin panel, and backend were developed concurrently, with compatibility filtering, real-time availability, and city-based admin controls built in parallel rather than sequentially, to keep search results and station data consistent from the start. This approach also allowed integration issues to be identified and resolved early.

  • Compatibility-first search engine built into core query logic
  • Real-time power point status tracking implemented across the network
  • Admin panel built as a first-class productβ€”stations, cities, and roles
  • iOS Swift and Android apps integrated against the same backend

QA, Load Testing, and Launch

All station data and billing flows were tested against real-time availability accuracy, compatibility matching edge cases, and role-based access boundaries before submission to the App Store and Google Play. We also validated station discovery and billing behavior under varying network conditions to ensure reliable performance.

  • Compatibility matching accuracy testing across vehicle and station types
  • Real-time availability and route-discovery testing under load
  • Role-based admin access and city-level permission testing
  • Launch across iOS, Android, and the web admin panel
